Case-study 2 visits

10/04/2019

The WWTP of El Toyo, where INCOVER Project Case Study 2 is placed, usually hosts visits of different stakeholders that take the interest in our research projects.

Last 22nd of March, a group of associated from the Spanish Society of Civil Engineers visited El Toyo to get to know the latest advances in water innovation. The visit was organized by the Provincial Representative of the Society, Eugenia García Sánchez, on the occasion of the annual meeting of the Andalusian territorial district Board of the Association. Many members of the Board of Directors of the Association attended this visit.

Raul Cano, Project Manager in the Innovation and Technology Department of Aqualia, guided the visit and explained the H2020 INCOVER Project and its treatment units.

Later on, on the first of April, Raul Cano also hosted a visit in El Toyo with foreign students from a Master of Water Management from Montpellier (France). The visit was organized by Ludivine Pradeleix, coordinator of the AgroParisTech School of Engineering.

The students visited El Toyo with the aim of learning about water management and water reuse innovative techniques, especially in high water stress areas such as Almería.

These visitors were shown the second case-study of the INCOVER, which takes place in two different locations in the south of Spain: Chiclana de la Frontera and El Toyo WWTP (Almería). In El Toyo, the visitor could observe the first full-scale HRAP of this size in the world that treats wastewater directly without any anaerobic nor primary clarifiers to obtain irrigation quality water. The HRAP is mixed by a paddle wheel of alternatively by a submersible mixer system, the LEAR®, which reduces mixing energy by 80%. The effluent is treated using planted filters with natural material for enhancing P and N recovery, and with solar oxidation disinfection and a smart irrigation system.

El Toyo WWTP usually hosts guided visits that bring stakeholders the opportunity to know better the treatment plant and the innovative projects that are placed there. For instance, next 26th of April, students from the Master of Chemical Engineering of the University of Almería will visit the plant.
